News broke this week that longtime Toledo radio personality Bob Kelly has passed away at 84, and like many in the area, I’ve been reflecting on just how big a part of the local media landscape he was.

Kelly—whose real name was Norm Plumer—was a staple on northwest Ohio airwaves for decades. Most folks will remember him as half of the “Kelly and Staples” duo on WRQN 93.5, a show known for its chemistry, quick wit, and that unmistakable local flavor you just don’t get anymore. I’ve embedded a few classic videos featuring Bob and his radio partner Dennis Staples below. If you grew up around here, they’re going to bring back some memories.

Also—huge shoutout to Craig, who shared this gem on Facebook:
Hilarious outtakes from Kelly and Staples’ local commercials
Unfortunately, I can’t embed that one, but trust me—it’s worth the click. These are outtakes from their Video Connection days and other local ads, and they are hilarious.

I didn’t know Bob personally, but I did run into him a few times back when I worked on Arlington. He was always very nice in our brief passings. That says something—you can tell a lot about someone by how they treat people when the cameras and mics aren’t on.

It was guys like this who inspired many of us to start a career in radio!

Thanks for the memories, Bob.
